Northern Beaches Hospital Transition to NSW Health

Patient Information

What is happening?

Northern Beaches Hospital will transfer to Northern Sydney Local Health District, part of NSW Health, on 29 April 2026.

Healthscope will continue to operate the hospital until this date and remains responsible for patient care until 7am on 29 April 2026.

Is the hospital still open?

Yes. The hospital remains fully operational, including the Emergency Department, operating theatres, outpatient clinics and inpatient services.

To support a smooth transition, there will be a short, temporary pause to some planned surgical and outpatient activity on Wednesday 29 & Thursday 30 April, with services returning to normal shortly after.

Will my appointment or surgery change?

No. Appointments and planned procedures are continuing as normal unless you are contacted directly by the hospital.

If any changes are required, our team will contact you directly.

Do I need to do anything?

No action is required. Please continue to attend appointments as scheduled.

What does this mean for private patients?

Under an interim arrangement with the Commonwealth Government, patients who elect to use their private health insurance for a procedure will be able to be scheduled according to the recommendation of their treating specialist at Northern Beaches Hospital until 30 June 2027, ensuring patient safety and continuity of care.

From 1 May 2026, most planned surgeries for both public and private patients will continue, provided they are clinically appropriate and within the hospital’s approved service levels.

Procedures that were already booked before 24 April 2026 will go ahead as planned, where they meet these requirements.

However, some procedures that are considered cosmetic or discretionary will not be offered following the hospital’s transition to public ownership, unless they meet specific criteria outlined in the NSW Health Planned Surgery Access Policy.

All other eligible procedures can continue to be booked and performed, with patients treated based on clinical urgency.

Patients should speak with their treating specialist, who can provide advice based on their individual circumstances.

Will there be changes to billing or health funds?

No. There will be no changes to the billing or health fund process and patients will still have the option to use their health funds as desired after 29 April 2026.

Any future changes will be communicated directly if relevant.
