Many Choices, One Great Team

Our team is here to help you during every stage of pregnancy and delivery, and after your baby is safely here.

We’re a community of happy, highly-experienced midwives, obstetricians and support staff who love what we do.

We are passionate about providing excellent care and supporting your birth plan.

Our job is a special one that involves the safe delivery of thousands of babies and the health and wellbeing of mums.

We’ll be there for you during that very special getting-to-know-you phase for parents and their precious new family member.

And as you head home we also want to do our best to help you and your families feel happy and confident. As well as providing advice around breastfeeding, bathing and baby-settling techniques, we also prioritise mums’ emotional wellbeing as they adjust to their new life.

Your Birthing Choices

At Northern Beaches Hospital, you have many birthing options so you can design the experience to suit you.

It begins with the care type:

  • The Private Experience - for privately insured mothers. You choose your obstretrician and enjoy a range of special extras that the private experience can offer including luxury high tea and celebration plate.
  • Public Care - as a public mum you can choose from a range of care models including midwifery group practice for low-risk pregnancies, midwifery-led care and GP shared care.
  • Want the private experience but don't have health insurance? We can tailor a package to suit your needs and discuss your individual costs.

Other options available include water births and midwifery in the home. Speak to our team about your choices.

Health Fund Information

Health insurance is an important part of budgeting for the birth of your baby. To minimise out of pocket expenses, Northern Beaches Hospital has negotiated agreements with all major health funds. While that’s a great start for you, it’s really important to consider other factors.

For instance, most health funds do not automatically cover neonatal care, unless family cover has been in place for three months. So, if you only have singles health insurance, consider a transfer to family cover at least three months before your expected date of delivery.

If you stay on singles cover and your baby is unwell and requires admission to our Special Care Nursery, you’ll need to settle the baby’s account on discharge from the hospital. If you’re expecting a multiple birth, singles health insurance will only cover one baby during your hospital stay. Family health insurance is highly advisable.

It’s best to contact your health fund as soon as possible so there are no financial surprises.
