Paediatrics Ward

The Northern Beaches Hospital delivers exceptional paediatric care to children and their families. As a newly-built hospital, we were able to create a space for young people that is welcoming, calming and allows for a more comfortable medical experience.

We're fussy about our staff, and have formed a cohesive team of seasoned paediatric nursing specialists and bright new talent. We provide a continuity of care to children so, where possible, they will be accompanied by paediatric nurses throughout their stay - for example, during all surgical checkpoints, pathology collections, and imaging.

The Paediatric Ward is located on the same floor as the Birthing Unit, Maternity Ward, and Special Care Nursery to offer a family-focused approach to care.

Our Paediatric Ward is child-friendly in both fit out and atmosphere. It features 2 new playrooms - complete with PS4 players and a DVD library - which look on to adjoining outdoor play areas.

All rooms are brand new, and have TVs and Wi-Fi as standard. Private patients have single rooms with en suite bathrooms, and public rooms accommodate up to 2 patients only. All rooms have folding beds so that parents and carers can sleep-in with their children.

You will have access to the following facilities during your child's hospital stay:

  • Shared kitchens, with free hot beverages
  • Bathrooms and showers
  • Resting areas
  • Beds and bedding
  • Coffee and meals in the Forest Kitchen food outlet on the Ground Floor

Support for families

Having a child in hospital can be a difficult experience for parents and carers. Our caring clinical team supports families in many different ways, and can be relied upon for assistance.

To ensure you are well-looked after, we have on-ward social workers who are available to talk to. And, as part of our regular discharge-planning, we will also link you in to community services when the time comes for your child to go home.

Child safety and respect is of the utmost importance at the Northern Beaches Hospital. Please note that the Paediatric Ward is a secure unit - non-staff cannot enter without being buzzed in.

Furthermore, all our clinical paediatric staff are specialised in their field and all employees (including ancillary staff and volunteers) undergo rigorous security checks and vetting.

Our paediatric services are not limited to a dedicated children's ward. We have specialist staff and child-friendly spaces across many hospital touch points, to ensure the care children receive is truly person-centred.

The Northern Beaches Hospital offers paediatric services in the following areas:

  • 8-bed paediatric section in the Emergency Department
  • 18-bed Paediatric Ward - provides specialised medical and surgical care to infants, children and adolescents
  • 6-bed short stay area within the Paediatric Ward - for short-term treatments and observation as an alternative to Emergency
  • Paediatric Ambulatory Care Service - a next-day clinic for non-critical Emergency patients

Allied Health Care:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Imaging
  • Pathology

Outpatient clinics

If you child becomes very ill during their stay, they will be sent to a paediatric intensive care unit at the Sydney Children's Hospital using the Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transfer Service (NETS).

NETS is a mobile intensive care service that provides inter-hospital treatment for critical cases. Our Paediatric Ward was purpose-built with NETS access points. Retrievals are fast and efficient, ensuring children receive theurgent care they need as soon as possible.

Once they are stabilised, your child may be transferred back to the Northern Beaches Hospital.
